White House Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.
At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.
A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
