Uche Fuels Straightforward Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
