The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is experiencing water scarcity. This milestone arrives after grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
An Update Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is free from any level of drought. This shift came after a period of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status involved intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were still classified as unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the average for this date.
This mountain snow, which accounts for about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for long-term water security. Hydrology managers point out that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the rest of the year.
