Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.
