Arsenal's Manager Admits Future Stay Hinges on Securing Major Honors.
On the eve of his sixth anniversary in charge, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is directly connected to winning major honors.
The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge
Arteta took over on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win a short time later. But, that early success stands as his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things must occur in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”
He will mark the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.
Present Challenges
Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.
Arteta is tied down by 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver sooner rather than later.
Survival in the Job
Arteta elaborated, stressing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, while singling out the squad's dedication as paramount. “At the end, the critical component are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”
Squad Setbacks
The squad heads into the upcoming game managing yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is likely to keep him out for several weeks.
A Different Club
Despite the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta believes the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.
The manager referenced the team's performances as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”
He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
